Polaron and AVL Bring AI-Powered Microstructure Analysis to Battery Design

Unlocking Battery Cell Design Insights through Teardown Analysis, AI-Driven Microstructure Characterization, and Physics-Based Modeling with AVL CRUISE M

Polaron and AVL are working together to connect battery microstructure directly to cell performance.

The technical workflow combines AVL’s cell teardown and SEM characterization with Polaron’s AI-powered image analysis. Starting from electrode microscopy, Polaron segments material phases and extracts quantitative properties including porosity, particle size, surface area and morphology.
From these 2D images, Polaron reconstructs representative 3D electrode microstructures and calculates transport properties such as tortuosity, effective diffusivity and conductivity. The models can then generate new virtual microstructures with controlled changes in properties such as porosity and active-material loading.

These structures are integrated into AVL CRUISE™ M simulations to investigate how microstructural changes affect cell-level performance revealing the trade-off between increasing energy density and maintaining efficient ion transport and power capability.

Together, Polaron × AVL creates a workflow from cell teardown → AI characterization → 3D reconstruction → virtual electrode design → electrochemical simulation  helping battery engineers move from observing microstructures to using them as a design variable.
